Saved by rap

emmanuel-jal 2.jpg

Some of these children who were forced to leave their homes are now turning to rap music as an escape from the pain and anger they feel.

Sometimes, rapping is simply a fun way
to pass the time. But other times,
with the songs they write, they want to send a message to the world

Listen to Laith, a 17-year-old orphan from Mosul (Syria) living now in a refugee camp in Iraq, who raps about his experiences and his hope for the future. What is his message?

Another good example is Emmanuel Jal, a former Sudanese child soldier who is now
a famous rapper. In an interview, he said:

Music is powerful. It is the only thing that can speak into
your mind, your heart, and your soul without your permission.

Emmanuel is living proof of the power of music and education. Watch and listen to the conference he gave in 2009 explaining what happened to him and why he decided
to become a rap singer.
